Interstate 78 East in Berks County was closed for several hours after several vehicles were involved in a crash around 5:23 p.m. July 28.

According to Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Chief Matt Krapf, firefighters dispatched to I-78 East at mile marker 43.8 in Berks County for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

“Crews arrived on scene to find one person entrapped in a tractor trailer and a large diesel fuel spill,” he emailed The Press. “Weisenberg crews assisted with fire suppression as well as rescue operations to remove the patient from the vehicle.”

He said other fire departments that assisted at the scene were Trexlertown, Fogelsville, Kutztown, Kempton and Hamburg.

Emergency medical services were provided by Cetronia, Kutztown, and Hamburg, Krapf added.

Firefighter rehabilitation was provided by Macungie Ambulance Corps.

“Crews were on scene for about 2.5 hours,” he stated. “I-78 eastbound was closed for multiple hours afterward for an extensive cleanup operation.”
